WHEN THE GALLOPERS
COME TO TOWN

Gallopers

From medieval charter fairs to the pleasure grounds of Skegness and Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire has a rich tradition of fairs. It is also home to John H. Rundle Ltd, based near Boston for over 90 years and "recognised as the leading repair and renovation people for the traditional galloper" (also known as a carousel).

Times are hard, so many folks say
Living hand to mouth, from day to day
But just for a while put your cares away
When the gallopers come to town
From Boston up to Grimsby town,
Spalding, Spilsby, all around
It’s a breath of life for the old showground
When the gallopers come to town

CHORUS
When the gallopers come to town
Painted hooves prancing up and down
With their colours so bright,
Such a wonderful sight
When the gallopers come to town

With heads held high they step so bold
Their paintwork shines in red and gold
It’s a proper treat for young and old
When the gallopers come to town
Rides and shows with lights ablaze
Hear the cries of the crowd as the music plays
There’s magic nights and golden days
When the gallopers come to town

... CHORUS

And who’s for the life of the travelling fair?
When your home’s a wagon rolling here and there
See all the townsfolk stop and stare
When the gallopers come to town
Build up, pull down, you need to be strong
Try to keep your distance, we won’t stay long
Gone in the morning with a wave and a song
When the gallopers come to town

... CHORUS

And it’s more than money and it’s more than pride
It’s a free kind of spirit that you feel inside
That keeps you steady on the endless ride
When the gallopers come to town

... CHORUS
